5 Things You Can Do Before Sending a Nasty Gram

After being in the corporate world for about two and a half years, I'm very familiar with the nasty gram.

What makes an email a nasty gram? The first definition on Urban Dictionary defined it as a letter in "business-angry" style, which I loved. Below was my favorite definition. It's spot on if you ask me.

It's my not personality to be overly assertive (or pushy, or aggressive, however you see it) at the office. Because of this, sometimes it's easier for my nasty side to come out in an email, rather than properly noting the issues or discussing it face-to-face. It's easier to hide behind an email and send something that you wouldn't say in person (or want to send after you calm down). The last thing I want to be in the office is petty and if I'm going to lack something I hope it's not tact.

Today I was on the receiving end of a nastry gram and wanted to nasty back. After thinking about what I wanted to write, I realized I needed to cool down before hitting reply all.

Here are five things you can do to cool down before sending a heated email.

1. Watch This

On this perfect day, don't let anything stand in your way (don't you just want to sing along?).
2. Call Someone Who Calms You Down
Now that I am in the real world, I really respect the office related advice my dad gives. At the very least it's a judgement free complaining zone. Grandparents can be great to call as well. Personally I know my Grandpa doesn't understand my job anyway so our conversations are always light and often remind me about the important things in life.

3. Remove the Recipients
If you want to reply with a nasty gram, at least remove all the recipients of the email and leave the "to" line blank as you write it. Adding the recipients back in before you send it will make you think twice about what you are saying and who you are saying it to.

4. Make a Cup of Hot Chocolate
Likely you don't actually need another cup of coffee, but you need to take a walk to the kitchen.

Your office likely has free hot chocolate packets, but when is the last time you actually made a cup? Chocolate causes the brain to release endorphins, chemicals that make us feel good.

Take a walk to the kitchen, make a cup of hot cocoa, and drink your calories. Brownie points if it's in this mug (and no judgement if it's true).
